Speaking with us ahead of his October 17 and 18 performance with the New Conductors Orchestra, Niemann reflects on the pivotal role of early-career support in his development, and how stepping into high-stakes arenas has challenged him to grow as both an artist and a leader.
What does it take to move from playing an instrument to leading an entire ensemble? For rising conductor Valentina Paolucci, the answer lies in a desire for self-expression and deeper connection with the environment at the stage. In this conversation before her October 17 and 18, 2026 debut with the New Conductors Orchestra, Paolucci reflects on her transition from violin to conducting, her commitment to contemporary works, and her thoughts on advancing women in orchestral leadership.
This week, the New Conductors Orchestra had the pleasure of speaking with contemporary Canadian composer Joel Toews to explore the creative spirit behind Mirrors in Haida Gwaii, and to get to know the composer. Mirrors in Haida Gwaii will be the U.S. premiering of “ORCHESTRAL VOICES,” NCO’s Fall concert series on October 17 and 18, 2026.
Luke Poeppel is an American-German conductor and pianist based in Rochester, NY, and received his Master’s Degree from the Eastman School of Music. He made his debut with the New Conductors Orchestra in the Orchestral Gems concert series on October 19 and 20, 2024, leading the ensemble in Paul Hindemith’s Symphony in Eb.
